A major US daily has echoed widespread reports of Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the 9/11 terrorist attack as well as support for the Daesh terrorist group's activities in Iraq and Syria.
“The Kingdom has spent untold millions promoting Wahhabism… that inspired the 9/11 hijackers and that now inflames the Islamic State (IS, ISIL),” said the Friday editorial of The New York Times, referring to the foreign-backed Daesh Takfiri group that uses Islam as the pretext for its terror campaign.
Wahhabism is the state religion in Saudi Arabia and widely considered a deviant interpretation of Islam that is rejected by most Muslims across the globe.
The editorial further focuses on the influence exerted by the Saudi regime and its oil-rich Arab allies along the Persian Gulf in the tiny European Muslim republic of Kosovo through funding a network of radical Imams and mosques that have recruited hundreds of Kosovars to join Daesh militants fighting in Syria and Iraq.
Citing a recent report of the Saudi-backed Wahhabi network in Kosovo, the editorial adds that since 2012 “some 314 Kosovars” have joined Daesh terrorists in the Middle East, “including two suicide bombers, 44 women and 28 children.”
“Kosovo is in this position largely because Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states have spent years developing and funding a network of imams, mosques and secretive associations there,” said the Timeseditorial, citing an article by its reporter Carlotta Gall.
According to the report, Kosovo’s head of counterterrorism police, Fatos Makolli, has confirmed the role of Saudi-trained clerics and groups in promoting the radical thinking of those that decided to join Daesh terrorists.
The daily also questions why Kosovo’s government, as well as US and UN officials “who administered postwar Kosovo” did “not act sooner to halt the radicalization and dispatch of the nation’s youth to fight along Daesh militants.
This is while the US has long remained a major backer of the foreign-backed terror campaign to oust the Syrian government with clear knowledge that it is being heavily sponsored by its regional allies, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan, among others.
The editorial concludes by insisting that sponsorship of radical militants by the Saudis and like-minded Muslim governments may eventually imperil them as well, pointing to 20 terror attacks in the Wahhabi-led kingdom by Daesh-linked terrorists since 2014.
